When you live in a region that hosts a real winter season your skin can get effed up. Long gone are the days when strawberry kiwi lip smacker could fix my problems. I have sensitive skin and the cold, dry air puts it in a funk. Here is a list of remedies that my friends and I can agree on. Tell the winter to eff off while you daydream about springtime.

At a younger age when my hormones were out of whack, classmates were mean to each other for negligible reasons, and I lacked the ability to defend myself, I would come home from school and cry. A lot. The emotional turmoil and the act of crying would exhaust me so I would fall asleep on my bed, always shaken awake by my mother when dinner was ready. The drama du jour seemed less traumatic after a nap.

I don’t face drama on-the-reg anymore (middle school was the effing worst). I try to steer clear of it, but occasionally I have the burning desire to tell people about themselves. Most people don’t want to hear it. They already know 90% of what I want to say, but they choose to ignore it.

Sometimes I reach my limit. If you are over the age of eighteen and you whine a lot, I will tell you about yourself. If you act in a way that creates large hurdles for others, I will tell you about yourself. You get the idea. Those are behaviors that other people would also discourage so I don’t feel too crazy-cat-lady-yelling-at-birds-in-the-park when I broach the subject that someone needs to check themselves before they wreck themselves (and others).¬† Read the rest of this entry »

Occasionally I have a massive guilt hangover: I realize I haven’t called my younger brother in two weeks, asked my roommate for job search updates, or kept in touch with the friend I ran into on the streets of New York. These are things I think are important, but I let them slide. I feel bad.

STOP. Eff the funk.

“Each time you judge yourself, you break your own heart.” -Swami Kripalu

It’s okay to spend time taking care of your own needs. You’re of no use to others if you can’t stand on your own two feet. Eff the guilt funk and treat yo self. Thank you Parks & Recreation.

Oh-em-gee… it’s my birthday today! Thank you for your support.

I started this blog and have continued to maintain it for two reasons: I was in what felt like more than a funk (slight depression) and a woman I grew up with first grade through college passed away unexpectedly. I knew that I had no time to waste but these two things made that cliché sink into my bones.

Or as they say it in New Orleans, “Laissez-les-bons-temps-rouler!” You may feel guilty about eating a bit too much or drinking a bit too much, but tomorrow isn’t promised so indulge when you’re at your wits end. Eff the funk and take a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana!

The honest-to-God’s-truth? Even on a Sunday night Bourbon Street smells like vomit, but there are many other places to indulge in guilty pleasures in N’awlins. Bourbon Street is like the Times Square of NOLA: cheap, dirty thrills, neon lights, souvenir t-shirts, and strange crowds. Take a stroll down it one night just to take in the essence and then keep it moving.

Outside of Bourbon Street there are delicious restaurants to eat at, a wide range of activities to experience, and a multitude of to-go drinks to be had.

Eff the funk (whatever negativity is floating in your mind at the moment) and spend five minutes looking at these adorable photos of animals!

Music soothes the soul before a baby is born: a mother’s heartbeat serves as constant, comforting noise to a child pre- and post-birth.

Skip forward to today, and your favorite song is probably not your mother’s heartbeat (unless you’re into dub step). Eff the funk by planning ahead and making your ultimate playlist for yuck-yuck days. Try to pick songs with a positive vibe that you’ve liked for years. Here is what I pulled together for my playlist:

Little Bitty Pretty One- Bobby Day & The Satellites
Black Betty- Ram Jam
In the Summertime- Mungo Jerry
Right Back Where We Started From- Maxine Nightingale
Good feeling- Flo Rida
99 Problems- Jay-Z
Together Again- Janet Jackson
I Decided (Part 2)- Solange
Honey (Bad Boy Remix)- Mariah Carey
Last Night- The Strokes
When Love Takes Over- David Guetta (featuring Kelly Rowland)
Lip Gloss- Lil Mama
Like a G6 (cover)- Hank and Cupcakes
1901- Phoenix
Dog Days Are Over- Florence + The Machine
Something Good Can Work- Two Door Cinema
Bennie and the Jets- Elton John
No Day But Today- Rent Soundtrack
Roll If You Fall- Barefoot Truth

What songs will you put on your beat-the-moody-blues playlist?

Sometimes you just need to be silly to get through the day. You know, the whole laugh so you don’t cry thing.

This lil shell is adorable.

There is more where that came from!
